Throughput Tests

We run throughput tests between our nodes every 2 hours. Below we show results from the data that we have collected.

Management Radio: 900 MHz Ubiquiti SR9 single hop tests

  1. Comparing performance of streetlight to streetlight and streetlight to rooftop. The first graph shows the throughput of our management radio between two pairs of nodes spaced roughly 200 meters apart. Node 015 is the source node and is mounted on a streetlight, nodes 003 and 010 are the sink nodes and are mounted on a rooftop and a streetlight respectively.

Analysis: the throughput between the two streetlight mounted nodes is superior to the streetlight to roof-mounted node pair. The difference ranges from ~500 Kbps to 3000 Kbps. This gain is expected due to the higher incidence of ground reflectence of the RF signal from the rooftop. Additionally, node 3 is mounted on a rooftop that has roof-mounted HVAC units whose periodic operation may provide aditional RF interference.

  2. Correlating throughput and climate. We would like to understand the impact of the weather on the throughput between the nodes. Using our meteorological sensors data recorded by our nodes, we can create a scatter plot showing the throughput on the y-axis and the temperature on the x. The second graph shows the scatter plot for the throughput between nodes 015 and 003.
